A commenter on my blog reported that he lost 52 pounds in 136 days, which by my calculations is 2.5 pounds a week. I had heard that one shouldn't really try to lose more than 2 pounds a week, but it seemed to work for him.

Is there any reason why the 2-pounds-a-week rule of thumb is there?

Up to 1 pound a day. (from the pH miracle)

I would assume (although I am no expert) that it would be safer if you lost the weight while cleansing your body in some way.

Can't speak to the 2-lb rule, but I have many professionals I have spoken with relax when they hear I intend not to exceed it. IsaGenix helps me lose at that rate (10-lbs monthly with minimal cravings). Ideal Protein MUCH faster, but the path is full of cravings and you may hit a wall unless you are good about supplements. I've noticed that friends who cleanse while they lose generally avoid gall-bladder problems, but the other way around is not so. Takes a bite out of your weight loss budget if you have to have a surgery. IsaGenix includes a cleansing component. Otherwise you might consider occasional bentonite (health food store).
